Productivity SA - a parastatal charged with assisting South African companies become productive and competitive - held its annual National Productivity Awards ceremony on Friday, 30 October 2009 at the Theatre-on-the-track in Kyalami, Johannesburg. The awards are aimed at recognizing organizations and companies which continue to improve their productivity, despite difficult trading conditions as a result of South Africa experiencing its first recession in 15 years. The event also marked Productivity SA’s 40th birthday.
Prowell Kitchens, a privately owned business, provides secure employment to 33 staff members in the rural area of Wellington. Prowell Kitchens has a sound reputation for designing and manufacturing quality crafted kitchens, interior units, components and joinery.
With the introduction of Productivity SA’s Workplace Challenge programme a “committed to performance” workforce was established. This highly structured and participative approach to continuous improvement resulted in the establishment of productivity management competencies at shop floor level.
Visible display of performance measures and targets and a regular review of projects and progress communicates a message of “performance matters”. Capacity building and skills development via Workplace Challenge participation resulted in the establishment of a strong productive and motivated management competence base within Prowell Kitchens.
